Have you ever felt that amazing feeling of joy when your child discovers something that he is good at and revells in it?
Last year we enrolled the two younger boys in a Theatre Arts camp held by a local Messianic Jewish congregation. It was soon obvious that my middle son had found his niche. He got the lead part in one of the skits and his performance was the one that everybody talked about after the fact.
Roll on a whole year…we were iffy about enrolling the boys in camp again, for financial reasons (as it is we’ll be paying off monthly) and the boys were reluctant to give up the notion of an unencumbered-by-any-formal-plans summer. Then the camp director himself called us and expressed his disappointment at the fact that we won’t be returning. He had already had some things in mind for the middle boy this year. So we decided to bite the financial bullet and go for it.
I’m soooooooooooo glad we did! It is worth every penny to see my boy so in his element. Here is a place where he is free, nay, encouraged, to be the out-of-the-box thinker that he is. Nobody is shaking a finger at him for being expressive, unconventional, and irrepressible. Everybody there just loves him and he loves being there. What a joy.
It made me think about how God as a parent just loves it when we fearlessly step out and do the things that he has placed within our hearts and our ability to do. If I can find such joy in my son finding a place where he can uniquely be himself, then surely God rejoices when we find our place too.
